Community Television

Community Television offers different kinds of television to meet a wider range of audience needs. It is community television's ability to be different and relate to the community it serves in a different way that makes community television an exciting option.

LINC TV is Australia's first Rural Community Television Broadcaster.

Community television is regarded as the third tier of broadcasting following government and privately owned commercial television. Community television offers fully democratic television broadcasting in Australia.

Community television encourages participation in a medium that has often had restricted access. Since 1987, sixteen aspirant community television groups have conducted more than 52 weeks of community text broadcast, including more than 30 hours of test transmission. In 1991 alone, hundreds of community groups and education institutions already contributed extensively to those broadcasts on a regular basis. In the two decades since the advent of community access video, local community television groups have developed in a wide variety of locations, from remote aboriginal communities to metropolitan areas.

The latest developments in technology have given the home video maker the capacity to produce broadcast quality programs.

During its five year test transmission phase, community television has put to air thousands of hours of programs made by everyone... from nine year old children to Australia's leading independent film makers. Community television is seeking to counter the movement towards networking, and away from locally relevant programing on mainstream services. It also prioritorises information and education as a key part of programming policy.

LINC TV INC. is a Community Access Television (CAT) station based at Southern Cross University in Lismore, Northern New South Wales, and is owned and operated by the local community. It provides an educational medium to the people of the NSW North Coast and is Australia's first regional community television station to broadcast. LINC TV abides by the relevant Australian Broadcasting Authority's (ABA) statutory requirements, and the rules and codes of practice of the Community Broadcasting Association of Australia (CBAA)
